Sat, 24 Dec 2011 00:27:00 -0800 70 Websites including RapidShare and ThePirateBay blocked in India by ISPs http://ranaonline.com/70-websites-including-rapidshare-and-thepirat http://ranaonline.com/70-websites-including-rapidshare-and-thepirat

Reliance ADA has resorted to a new technique to stop piracy of its latest movie release, DON 2. Reliance has sought a "John Doe" order from the Delhi High Court, where the Court has ordered that the ISPs and Cable networks should ensure that pirated copies of the movie DON2 should not available through their network.

RelianceADA, through Sanjay Tandon, VP Music and Anti-Piracy, has sent a mail to one of our ISPs, asking them to cooperate and block 70 websites for a week. This is a blanket ban using the Court Order as a shield.

Here is a copy of the list that they have asked to be banned. This list includes top file sharing sites like RapidShare and ThePirateBay.

The Hon'ble High Court order dated 19th December is also attached, where these websites are not mentioned and a blanket ban is not permitted or asked for. It appears that instead of banning the objectionable content and ensuring that piracy is curbed, the ISPs also take the easy route and ban everysite that may be used to distribute the content in question.

John_Doe_Order_19-12-2011.pdf Download this file
Given the actions of the Content owner and the ISPs, it appears that the Government's plan to monitor online content will finally lead to banning the Social Networking sites in India.

Till then...

Thu, 10 Nov 2011 22:10:19 -0800 HILARIOUS : You can't fix stupid. http://ranaonline.com/hilarious-you-cant-fix-stupid http://ranaonline.com/hilarious-you-cant-fix-stupid This one is from a forward!

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house.
To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a
Sign on it saying: 'Free to good home. You want it, you take it.'
For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice.
He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal.
So he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale $50.'

The next day someone stole it!

They walk amongst us!
-------------------------------------
I stopped at Mc Donald’s and ordered some fries.
The girl behind the counter said “would you like some fries with that?”

--------------------------
*
One day I was walking down the beach with
Some friends when someone shouted.....
'Look at that dead bird!'
Someone looked up at the sky and said...'where?'

They walk among us!

----------------------------------------------------------

While looking at a house, my brother asked the
Estate agent which direction was north because
He didn't want the sun waking him up every morning.
She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?'
My brother explained that the sun rises in the east
And has for sometime. She shook her head and said,
'Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff......'

They Walk Among Us!
--------------------------------------------

My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria,
when we overheard an admin girl talking about the
sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the beach.
She drove down in a convertible, but said
she 'didn't think she'd get sunburned
because the car was moving'.

They Walk Among Us!
------------------------------------

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car
which is designed to cut through a seat belt
if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the car trunk.

They Walk Among Us!
-------------------------------------------------
I was going out with a friend when we saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain.
My friend said, 'Ouch! The chain must rip
out every time she turns her head!"
I had to explain that a person's nose and ear
remain the same distance apart no
matter which way the head is turned...

They Walk Among Us !
-------------------------------
I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area and went to the lost luggage office and reported the loss.
The woman there smiled and told me not to worry
because she was a trained professional and
said I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me,
'Has your plane arrived yet?'...
(I work with professionals like this.)

They Walk Among Us!
------------------------------------------------
While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man
ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut
into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time
then said 'Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry
enough to eat 6 pieces.

They Walk Among Us!

And last, but not least:

Dumb as a box of Rocks
TRUE STORY:

A noted psychiatrist was a guest speaker at an academic function where Nancy Pelosi happened to appear. Ms Pelosi took the opportunity to schmooze the good doctor a bit and asked him a question with which he was most at ease.

'Would you mind telling me, Doctor,' she asked, 'how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?'

'Nothing is easier,' he replied. 'You ask a simple question which anyone should answer with no trouble. If the person hesitates, that puts you on the track..'

'What sort of question?' asked Pelosi.

Well, you might ask, 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?''

Pelosi thought a moment, and then said with a nervous laugh, 'You wouldn't happen to have another example would you? I must confess I don't know much about history.'

Sadly, they walk among us!

Traffic Camera

A man was driving when he saw the
flash of a traffic camera. He figured that his picture had been taken for exceeding the limit, even though he knew that he was not speeding... Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. Now he began to think that this was quite funny, so he drove even slower as he passed the area again, but the traffic camera again flashed. He tried a fourth time with the same result. He did this a fifth time and was now laughing when the camera flashed as he rolled past, this time at a snail's pace... Two weeks later, he got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt..

You can't fix stupid.

Tue, 08 Nov 2011 07:27:19 -0800 RegClean Pro Awarded 5 Stars! http://ranaonline.com/regclean-pro-awarded-5-stars http://ranaonline.com/regclean-pro-awarded-5-stars

This review applies to version 6.2 of Regclean Pro by Systweak

Regclean Pro is among the many registry optimization tools available that claim to remove unused and invalid entries clogging up your system and slowing down its performance.

In our tests we found that this program thoroughly scans all the entries in your computer’s registry, fixes any found errors, and defragments and compacts this vital component of your system to ensure better performance.

There are various area’s in the registry, including its main areas – ActiveX and COM components, application paths, file types, history lists, shared files, software entries, startup, etc. Regclean Pro’s scan engine carefully searches for any registry errors in all its main areas. RegClean Pro also allows exclusion of entries where easily remove those entries from the cleaning process that you believe do not require fixing. We are not sure how important will this be for the regular users but the advanced users will definitely like this customization!

What we like more is that you can schedule the program to automatically perform its “scan and fixing” processes regularly. You can setup a time and the program’s advanced engine will do whatever is needed to bring your system up to the mark.

For extra safety, Regclean Pro provides you with a backup registry tool that allows you to perform both partial and full backups previous to any optimization process. We saw that these were also automated to a certain extent, making the process more secure.

Its well-organized interface allows you to perform each of the tasks easily and in a wizard-like fashion. However, if you are in a hurry, you can always use its “One Click Optimization” function, which scans, fixes, and optimizes your PC in one single operation.

We believe that as a stand alone Registry Cleaner, this is one of the best products available in the market at the moment.

My name is Peter Landos from Greece.  A 48 years old vegetable farmer for the British market in Zimbabwe.

I got your profile from your countries trade directory and after proper analysis, I decided to contact you to reveal to you a business opportunity that will be highly rewarding to both parties.

I was a victim of the land reform program in Zimbabwe during the heat of the reclamation of white owned lands by Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean president. During that era there were series of attacks on successful white farmers which I happened to be one of them. I accidentally (though in the cause of self-defense) shot and killed one of Mugabe's supporters and activists. That situation attracted a serious problem for me with the authorities loyal to Mugabe. I was brutalized and almost got killed in the process. I was finally held in the hospital prior to a trial that would end up convicting me for murder.

I managed with the help of the hospital operatives to escape from the hospital with my wife and son abandoning all my assets in the country. I have been a refugee in a foreign land ever since then but recently, I was informed by a friend of mine who works under the government that mineral resources were discovered in one of lands that I own in Marange area in eastern Zimbabwe. I made discreet efforts to sell the land to a mining company. (Details to be provided).

The reason why I am contacting you is that we are currently refugees in another country (details to be provided). The payment for the mineral rich land was not done by overseas transfer since we were not able to open account in the country where we are seeking political asylum protection. The funds were held in trust in our family name and there are restrictions for us to do business of any form in that country and there is a limit to the volume of funds we can be in possession of also. We cannot even claim the funds at the moment.

We intend to move the funds out of the country hence will need an overseas partner. You see, this offer is highly rewarding. I do not want to mention figures here until I get your permission.

As soon you have read this message please get back to me for all hidden details. As an overseas partner you shall receive these funds in your home country as our next-of-kin hence adequate compensation awaits you for the service you shall render. The only prerequisite for this transaction is your ability to travel out of your country and also your ability to receive funds from overseas country in your home country.

We await your reply strictly at the email address:   estelle1@tlen.pl

Thanks,

Peter Landos

The new spaces was a surprise to me, looks more like Google+ circles! The application itself is so awesome that I wonder I'll ever need a computer again to post things!
The app has a well designed reader for following people. There is a wonderful likes and comment manager. The new 'sharing' options are probably the best in class and then the overall look and feel and performance of the application make it a winner hands down.
I only wish wordpress did something like this. I am waiting for Posterous to allow using JavaScript in the template so that I can insert ad snippets (if I ever think of doing that). I had a word from them that they'd do it in a beta release but that's been like ages ago!
Kudos Posterous. Well done!

Thu, 21 Jul 2011 08:28:35 -0700 21 Lessons for Life http://ranaonline.com/21-lessons-for-life http://ranaonline.com/21-lessons-for-life This is from an email I received a long time ago. It has everything one may need to lead a meaningful life!
Well, Almost!!

  1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
  2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
  3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
  4. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.
  5. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.
  6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
  7. Believe in love at first sight.
  8. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
  9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
  10. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
  11. Don't judge people by their relatives.
  12. Talk slowly but think quickly.
  13. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'
  14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  15. Say 'bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.
  16. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
  17. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.
  18. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  19. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  20. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
  21. Spend some time alone.

Don't forget to share with others if you like this!

Mon, 20 Jun 2011 14:21:15 -0700 100% cutoff for admissions to SRCC http://ranaonline.com/100-cutoff-for-admissions-to-srcc http://ranaonline.com/100-cutoff-for-admissions-to-srcc There is a national debate on the colleges in Delhi University closing admissions at 100%. Colleges like SRCC have closed admissions for students with less that the perfect ton! Truth: This score is required only for students who didn't study either Maths, Economics, Business or Accounts in their school. The question is if you didn't study either of the above four, why would you want to join SRCC? This is like asking the IITs to allow admissions to students from a commerce background. If a college closes admissions at 100%, it means there were enough students with those marks, which means it was achievable. The problem probably is in accepting that you were not among the best. Better luck next time. It's rewarding the efforts. Why would the college want a mediocre student to join when there are better students willing to join? When you want your doctor, lawyer, even the driver to be the best that money can buy, why won't you want your funds advisor or accountant to be the best? We don't want mediocrity in our lives but we want a college to accept students who score less because we expect them to be public service institutions. Public service is rewarding merit and not promoting mediocrity because we are feeding ourselves on the Nehruvian philosophy of Socialism. Allowing complacency to seep in the students would only promote more corruption, as they would know that they can get away by not performing at par with standards set by the best. Instead of asking students to score more, we want the colleges to lower their cutoffs! Would you employ someone who scored less because you 'think' s/he'll be a better employee? Let's get real about our lives and let the students understand that life is not fair. There is cut throat competition in the world and they need to prepare for it. There are better ways to tackle these challenges. The education system can be improved to inculcate more vocational skills in students. The colleges may be asked to have a better sports or cultural quota. The board may include other non-academic activities in grading students for the purpose of university admissions. Blaming the university or the college for this is absolutely lame. Final: If a college in the United States accepted students with a perfect SAT score only, would you ask the college to lower it's requirements or ask your ward to study harder for the admissions? Would this Perfect Score policy mean the system is flawed or would it make it the best and most desirable college for you?!?

Fri, 29 Apr 2011 14:03:54 -0700 Funny Facebook Fans! http://ranaonline.com/funny-facebook-fans http://ranaonline.com/funny-facebook-fans I am currently facing a really funny problem. This someone is trying to open an account on Facebook using one of my old email address. If that wasn't enough, he is also trying to claim the email address!

Last week I was sitting in the office doing my routine work when I got a mail that an account was registered on Facebook using this old Gmail address that I didn't use anymore, except for Paypal :p. I dismissed the mail thinking that it was yet another trick of Facebook getting more people to signup, like google did for Orkut users at one point in time. Minutes later, I received another email from Google, telling me that the password for the email account has been reset!! That was the time when I realised that there was something wrong. Incidentally, the Facebook account was created but it needed to be activated before any activity started. To activate the account, the 'hacker' needed access to the email account and so he requested for a new password. I immediately logged on to my Gmail account and changed the password. Moments later I got another email where he ha requested for a password. I also got an email from Facebook where the account was mentioned activated, which meant that the 'hacker' had access to the email. This went on for about three rounds in all where both of us requested password and continued to reset them.

I finally got tired of this cat and mouse game. I knew I this could continue for days and I wouldn't be able to stop this 18 year old guy who was hell bent on getting his Facebook account in my name! I did some research on Gmail security and found a 'two factor authorisation'. This was a special feature for people with an iPhone or Android device.

With the new Google Two Factor authorisation, I could download the Google Authenticator app to my phone and whenever I wanted to login to my Gmail account, it would ask me for a secure code that was generated in real time on this application. It meant that for anyone to access my account, they also needed to have access to my phone.

With this new weapon with me, I immediately secured my Gmail account and moved on to Facebook. While Facebook was not that techno, it offered me the option to track all the login attempts. Whenever I would login from a new device, Facebook would send an email to me, notifying me of the new login location in the form of Device Name (it is not actual 'location').

I changed all the passwords and had a breath of relief. I deactivated the Facebook account so that his privacy was not breached. He had already sent a few requests out to people! I got another email today, notifying me that a Facebook account was created using my email but now I know that he doesn't have access to the email account and therefore I can relax, till something new comes up!

So much for Facebook enthusiasts who don't even bother to check if the email account they want to use is their's or not!

Sat, 23 Apr 2011 08:54:18 -0700 By the People, For the People! http://ranaonline.com/by-the-people-for-the-people http://ranaonline.com/by-the-people-for-the-people Don't ask what the country has done for you, but what you have done for the country. These are not words but a lesson for the people of any country. We, in India, can learn the most from this line. We are used to ploughing the land for personal benefit, without realising that the resources of the country don't belong to 'me' but to 'us'. We continue to take things from our surroundings and keep using them. We don't realise that what we are using didn't belong to us, wasn't created by us, and was supposed to be shared with everyone else who ha a rightful share in it. Short story!
A boy was walking home from school in the scorching heat of the summer sun. He was sweating and wanted nothing but a glass of chilled water. Even in that heat, he saw an old man trying to plant a sapling in the neighbourhood park. The boy sure found it funny. The old man had not much time left and the boy became really curious to know something. He asked 'Why do you want to plant a sapling when you would never be able to enjoy it's fruit or shade?' The old man replied, 'The fruit that I got and the shade that I sat under, was all from the trees that my grand father planted. I want to make sure that my grand son is also able to enjoy like me. I may not benefit from these trees but I know that someone will.'

We are thinking only about what we get and what more can we get. We don't spend anytime thinking about what will happen when all that we have right now will end. This is like fossil fuel. We continue to use the petrol and diesel of this planet. It took millions of years for them to be created. We know that they can't be reproduced and yet when they get depleted due to our shameless consumption, we don't stop and ask for more. We cry when the prices rise but don't understand that it is about demand and supply. We are consuming way more than the supply and we need to control our demand if we want the supply to sustain. What stops us from controlling our demand? Simple. We all think that whatever is available belong to everyone. Everyone is using it. Why should I give up my share?! Why should I change alone..

We need to learn. Whatever is, is By the People, For the People.

Sat, 16 Apr 2011 15:14:20 -0700 Corrupt People of a Beautiful Country http://ranaonline.com/corrupt-people-of-a-beautiful-country http://ranaonline.com/corrupt-people-of-a-beautiful-country I love my country. I think there is no other place in the world that is as amazing as India. It is naturally beautiful, blessed by the weather gods, the culture is colourful, the history dates back as far as civilisation itself... There is no reason this country once known as the Golden Bird should not be like that again, except the people.

India was intruded and looted numerous times and was ruled for almost a decade by invading rulers. It is a known fact that no invasion can succeed without the help of the local population and such was true for India as well. Every time a foreign invader had a chance to expand the kingdom, there was an Indian partner who helped him accomplish his mission. The Indian rulers had treaties with the Mughals and the British, where they paid taxes to these invaders to preserve their own small princely states.

India has always been looted by those who are in power. Historically, the populace has lived under the law of the chosen few, by the chosen few and for the chosen few. It has happened for so long that the people have become used to the law being for the privileged. These handful manipulate the people, twist the rules for their own benefit, change thaw and not refrain from doing anything that may benefit them over others. This is the rule of the land.

This has made the elite status the most in demand! It was not possible for the people to join the group of the chosen few during the days of Monarchy, when you could only be born a prince. Things changed with democracy and suddenly everyone realised the power of the people. Those who had this power, joined the chosen few in the mission for looting this country. Those who didn't have a fan following started to create their cult groups in the name of language, religion, cast, creed or region. These minority groups had the power to alter the system by concentrating the deciding veto in the hands of even fewer people. when those who hadn't lived the luxury of enjoying power suddenly found that they could alter the fate of over a billion people, they found it to be the right opportunity to use it to alter their own fates. An they did.

These minority groups that are based on new found affiliations proclaim that they have a cause but more often than not, this cause is to satisfy the selfish needs of the leaders of such groups. In their desire to get all that they can, they forget that they are denying the right of survival and honesty to the people of this country. They are setting an example that promotes corruption and the practice of putting self over all others for petty or large benefits.

Here begins a chain of deterioration of the conscience of innocent people. Someone who sees how the nobodies of yesterday suddenly become insanely rich tries to find out how. When there appears a simple path, with little corruption, it is easily chosen over hard work and honesty. The inner voice and conscience are all forgotten in this god fearing country. All and sundry chose the corrupt path for quick glory and what remains in the end is a country that could have ruled the world but hasn't been able to guide it's own people.

State of the Union address in India would be very unpleasant at the moment!
